Location

img: Elche in EuropeThe municipality of Elx, in the south of Spain’s Comunidad Autónoma de Valencia, covers an area of 326 kmkms.² and includes 9 km of excellently maintained beaches stretching along its coastline behind pine-clad sand dunes. It has a population of 200,000 and its 30 outlying boroughs known as the Camp d’Elx also contain several large built-up areas.

img: The Arco MediterráneoThe city is on a plain crossed by the Molar, Tabaià and Castellar Sierras making up the last foothills of the Sistema Bético mountain system. These Sierras endow the municipality with a range of different types of countryside. The Pantano de Elx reservoir, built in 1632 collects the waters of the river Vinalopó that divides the city in two.

Elx enjoys wonderful transport connections: it has two railway stations and will in the future be an AVE high-speed train stop. The municipality also includes the El Altet International Airport while the Port of Alicante is a mere 20 kilometres distant. The city also has road links to the Mediterranean toll motorways and Madrid dual carriageway.

Its privileged location, 20 kilometres from Alicante and 50 from Murcia, makes it a strategic enclave. Together with the two above cities and other large towns, Elx is part of the southern axis of the Arco Mediterráneo. It is a highly dynamic area both in terms of its economy and demography.
