The Estadio Martínez Valero was built in 1976, to replace the old, smaller Altabix located in the eponymous district of the city. The new stadium was inaugurated on September 8th 1976 by a football match between Elche and the Mexican National team, resulting in a 3-all draw. It is one of the largest stadiums in Spain measuring 105×68 metres with a capacity of 39,000 spectators.
The stadium also boasts other sporting facilities such as practice pitches, four changing rooms, a hydromassage bath, hydromassage power showers, a video room, first-aid room and massage room.
In addition, it has a large car park with space for 1,800 vehicles, 8 refreshments stands distributed throughout the stadium, a large operations control room which means that any event can receive optimum media coverage, a press room, a functions room, eight television boxes and twenty-six boxes for the press and radio.
