The Elche Mystery Play
Date: August 14th and 15th
The Elche Mystery Play, declared a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible World Heritage by UNESCO in 2001, is the city’s most deeply-rooted cultural manifestation.
This lyrical play dates from the Middle Ages and depicts the Dormition, Coronation and Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
The play is performed every year in the Basílica de Santa María on August 14th First Act and 15th Second Act, during the city’s fiesta to celebrate its Patroness. There are however full dress rehearsal performances on the 11th, 12th and 13th.
Ticket prices vary between €6 and €42 depending on the day and seat. Tickets for both the dress rehearsals and official performances of the Mystery Play can be acquired from the end of July onwards in Casa de la Festa (c/ Major de la Vila, nº 27, tel. 965 45 61 12), by calling Servicam on 902 44 43 00, or at the www.cam.es. website.
