Lent and Les Velles de Serra
Date: March/April
Lent is a forty-day period of penitence to prepare for Easter. A singular tradition takes place on the Wednesday before the fourth Sunday of Lent: the citizens make “velles de serra”, straw-stuffed scarecrows dressed in old clothes that are placed on balconies or in doorways used by their creators to make a critical social comment. In recent years this tradition has been revived and there is now even an organised competition.
