The square, Moorish Almohad Calahorra Tower dates from the late 12th and early 13th century and defended the city’s most important gate, the gate that gave access to the road to Alicante. The first references to La Calahorra are from 1264, when Jaume I demanded the Moorish population’s surrender, promising to respect the Islamic community’s laws and traditions.
On August 20th 1492, the Town Council decided to build an annexe to the tower which would house a scales to check the amount of wheat being taken to the flour mills.
