The actress Concha Velasco, the festival crier, will open Elche’s municipal patron saint celebrations on 8 August, where one of the added attractions this year is that there will be twice as many mascletàs, or firecracker displays.
There will be four instead of two pyrotechnical displays this year, which will take place on 11, 12, 14 and 15 August at half past one in the afternoon in the Paseo de la Estación. This initiative is the result of the growing interest in gunpowder, which is frequently used in our Region’s celebrations.
Another attraction in the fiestas are the stages set up by the local radio stations Cadena Cope, Cadena 100 and Onda Cero Europa FM, where some of the most sought-after artists on the Spanish music scene will perform, the most notable being Mojinos Escozíos, with an entertaining show, Sergio Dalma, Antonio Orozco and Pastora.
The Moors and Christians festivities will also take place from the 8 to 12 August, when the townspeople re-enact the battle between Moorish and Christian troops and there are spectacular processions. The Charanga will be the protagonist on the 11, when the different commissions taking part in the city’s fiestas will parade in their original carriages.
